How Long Are the Stems in DIY Wedding Flower Buckets?
One question DIY brides ask is:
“How long will the flower stems be in my DIY wedding buckets?”
And honestly? I’m always impressed when someone thinks to ask it because it tells me they are truly planning ahead for a smooth wedding day setup.
If you are ordering DIY wedding flower buckets from Ella June Gardens (or any local flower farm), here’s what you need to know before buying vases, floral foam, or centerpiece containers.
The Short Answer
The stems in DIY flower buckets are harvested at their natural growing length.
That means:
Some flowers may be around 12 inches long
Some may be 18–24 inches
Some line flowers and greenery may be 30 inches or longer
Every bucket contains a natural mix of flower varieties, so stem length will vary depending on what is blooming beautifully during your wedding week.
Why Aren’t All the Stems the Same Length?
Unlike imported flowers from wholesale floral warehouses, locally grown wedding flowers are harvested fresh from the garden at their healthiest stage.
That means each flower variety naturally grows to a different height.
For example:
Delphinium, Snapdragons, Foxtail lilies and larkspur tend to be tall
Dahlias, Peonies, Zinnias are often medium length
Super rare and specialty blooms or accent flowers may be shorter
This variety actually helps DIY brides create arrangements with movement, texture, and that lush “garden gathered” look so many brides love.
Should I Buy Tall Vases?
Not necessarily.
Most DIY brides are surprised to learn that flowers are usually trimmed during arranging to fit the vase properly.
I always recommend:
Buying the vases you truly love. Many get best results with centerpiece vases 6” - 8” tall with an opening no bigger than 5”
Have flower clippers or floral snips available during setup —scissors just don’t do the job typically.
Trim stems as you design each arrangement
Trying to match every vase perfectly to uncut stem length usually creates more stress than flexibility.
Do DIY Brides Need Floral Foam?
Usually not.
Most vase arrangements can be created beautifully without floral foam, especially with garden-style flowers.
However, foam can occasionally help with:
Very large ceremony arrangements - Arch pieces, meadows most often use foam.
Wide-mouthed vessels — Are you using a large urn? You will thank yourself for planning for foam here.
Chandelier installations needing extra support
For standard centerpieces and bud vases, many brides skip foam entirely.
My Favorite DIY Wedding Flower Tip
Have at least:
2–3 pairs of flower clippers
Buckets of clean water nearby
A trash bag for stem trimmings
Extra time for arranging
The setup process becomes so much more enjoyable when you are not rushing.
A friend of mine once used inexpensive clippers from Dollar Tree for her entire wedding weekend and they worked surprisingly well!
